Tomato De Barao Black (Mahogany) (80 Days) – Russian Heirloom Plum
A distinctive member of the renowned De Barao family, this mahogany-colored strain is celebrated for its beauty, productivity, and storage qualities. Originally popularized in Russia, it remains one of the most versatile and dependable small-fruited heirlooms.- Fruit: Small, oval tomatoes about 1 x 2 inches, ripening to a deep mahogany-brown color. Thin-skinned but juicy, with smooth texture and excellent keeping quality. Fruits form in heavy clusters that continue through the season.
- Flavor: Sweet and rich, with a subtle almond-like note. Juicy and refreshing, equally good eaten fresh or preserved.
- Best Uses: Exceptionally versatile—delicious for fresh eating, ideal for canning whole, and outstanding in pickles or sauces. The “one-bite” size also makes them a favorite for kids’ lunch boxes and snacks.
- Growth Habit: Vigorous indeterminate plants that reach up to 6 feet tall and require strong staking or trellising. Extremely productive, with clusters ripening continuously.
- Harvest: Mid-season maturity at around 80 days. In Canadian gardens, fruits ripen reliably through August and beyond. Before frost, harvest all fruits—ripe or green. Green fruits will ripen indoors on trays, extending the harvest well into late fall.
The De Barao Black (Mahogany) delivers abundant crops of richly flavored, mahogany-hued tomatoes that combine heirloom charm with outstanding garden performance.
