How to Grow Herbs from Seed
-
Start indoors: Sow seeds indoors anytime after March 1. Use clean pots or seed trays filled with a high-quality garden soil mix.
-
Planting depth: Cover seeds with soil about twice their size. For very tiny seeds, simply press them gently onto the soil surface without covering.
-
Watering: Mist the soil lightly to keep it evenly moist, but not soggy.
-
Covering: Place a clear plastic cover (such as poly film) over the container to hold in warmth and moisture. Keep in a warm, sunny spot.
-
After germination: Once seedlings sprout and reach about 1 inch tall, thin them out so only one seedling remains per pot. If using a flat, carefully transplant seedlings into individual pots.
-
Transplanting outdoors: After the danger of frost has passed, move seedlings into the garden. Space plants at least 12 inches apart to allow healthy growth.
