Aztec Tobacco (Nicotiana rustica)
Aztec tobacco, also known as Wild Tobacco or Makhorka, this ancient heirloom variety was traditionally grown by indigenous peoples of the Americas and later widely cultivated in Russia. Renowned for its exceptionally high nicotine content—up to nine times stronger than Virginia tobacco—Aztec Tobacco is one of the most potent tobacco known.
A hardy, fast-growing plant, it thrives even in cooler climates and poor soils where other tobacco varieties may fail. Plants reach up to 3 ft. tall with lush foliage and clusters of small yellow blooms that also attract pollinators.
Historically valued for ceremonial, medicinal, and smoking uses. In cigarette blends Aztec tobacco is used to make the smoke stronger. Aztec tobacco is a fascinating addition to the garden for collectors, ethnobotanical growers, or those interested in traditional tobacco culture.
