Burley Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)
Burley tobacco is one of the most widely used varieties in cigarette production across the United States, prized for its smooth, mild character and excellent blending qualities. While not grown commercially in Canada, it adapts well to home gardens with proper care.
Plants grow up to 5 ft. tall, producing broad, heavy leaves that cure to a light brown color—perfect for pipe use or for blending into cigarette tobaccos. This is a productive and flavorful variety, though it requires a little more attention than hardier Canadian types: leaves can be sensitive to drought stress and may break in strong winds if not protected.
