Growing lavender from cuttings is the most economical and efficient way to expand your lavender patch. It does require some care and patience — but with the right steps, your cuttings will develop into strong, healthy plants.

How to Grow Lavender from Cuttings

Our cuttings are single stems with about 1 inch of woody base, taken from healthy, live lavender plants. They may or may not include a flower head depending on the season. Cuttings do not have roots yet, so they need to be rooted first.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Prepare the pot
Use a well-draining, light sandy soil with a bit of compost or manure.

  2. Plant the cutting
Insert it into the soil so that the woody part is fully underground.

  3. Water carefully
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy.

  4. Choose a sunny spot
Place the pot in a bright location — lavender loves full sun.

  5. Be patient — and don’t disturb
Do not transplant or handle the plant while it is rooting. Wait until it develops visible new green, bushy growth.

  6. Transplant outdoors
Once your lavender is at least 5 inches tall with a 3-inch spread, transplant it to its permanent sunny spot in the garden.

Tip: Once established, lavender is a low-maintenance plant that rewards you with beautiful blooms, calming fragrance, and a pollinator-friendly garden. Growing from cuttings lets you create a lush lavender field in just a season or two!
