Growing Herbs

How to Grow Herbs from Seed

1. Start Indoors

  • When: Any time after March 1.

  • Use a clean garden soil mix.

  • Plant in individual pots or a seed-starting flat.

2. Planting Seeds

  • General rule: Cover seeds with soil about 2× their thickness.

  • For tiny seeds (like basil or thyme): just press them gently into the soil surface — don’t cover.

3. Watering

  • Water gently with a spray bottle or light sprinkle.

  • Keep soil moist but not soaked (wet soil can cause rot).

4. Germination

  • Cover pots with clear plastic/poly to hold in warmth and moisture.

  • Place in a sunny, warm spot (like a south-facing window).

5. After Germination

  • Once seedlings are about 1 inch tall:

    • If in pots: thin to 1 plant per pot.

    • If in a flat: transplant seedlings into individual pots.

6. Moving Outdoors

  • When: After all danger of frost has passed.

  • Transplant into the garden or larger pots.

  • Space plants at least 12 inches apart so they have room to grow.

That’s it! Most herbs are low-maintenance — just give them sun, well-drained soil, and regular watering, and you’ll be enjoying fresh homegrown flavor all summer long.
