I grow everything on raised beds. In Ontario climate I found it is most appropriate way to grow vegetables, for several reasons, the main reason being: in provides good drainage if properly planned, and in flooding situation that we are currently experiencing I feel safe that my plants are kept above the water. And we do have such flooding every year. So all that water is flowing between raised beds - down to the drainage canal - down to the pond and - when pond is overflowed - out to county drainage system. We put some work into planning and digging drainage canals over couple of years while watching out plants drowning some times in flood water. But now it starts working as it should. Hint: when you planning your drainage system - try to follow the natural water flow directions and just help nature, don't go against.
