Hibiscus Luna Rose – A Bold, Beautiful Perennial
Hibiscus Luna Rose is a stunning addition to any garden, known for its large, eye-catching bright pink blooms that stand proudly on a 5-foot-tall bush. It flowers generously from July thru September, bringing continuous color and tropical charm to your landscape.
This is a hardy perennial — the stems die back to the ground with the first frost, but the plant reawakens each spring, growing stronger and fuller each year.
The beautiful hibiscus calyxes are not only decorative but also deliciously useful. They’re traditionally used to make hibiscus tea, a vibrant dark-pink herbal infusion with a tangy, cranberry-like flavor.
How to Harvest Calyxes
Wait until petals start to fade or fall off – at this stage, the calyx (the green or slightly reddish cup at the base of the flower) has fully developed and contains the best flavor and color for tea.
Remove the calyx from the stem – gently twist or snip it off, leaving the stem behind.
Clean and dry – rinse briefly to remove any dirt or insects, then dry in a cool, dark, ventilated place.
How to Grow Hibiscus from Seed
Hibiscus seeds take time and patience to germinate — but the reward is well worth it.
1️⃣ Soak the seeds in warm water overnight before planting.
2️⃣ Sow seeds indoors, twice as deep as their size, in pots or seed trays with moist soil.
3️⃣ Keep soil evenly watered until seedlings appear.
4️⃣ When seedlings reach about 6 inches tall, transplant them outdoors in a sunny spot, leaving 3 feet of space around each plant.
5️⃣ Remember — it’s a perennial, so your hibiscus will return every spring, growing larger and more spectacular year after year.
