We often receive questions from customers asking: “What’s the best tobacco variety to grow in Ontario—or in Canada?”
On our farm, we grow and recommend several varieties that thrive in Canadian conditions:
Southern Ontario offers an ideal climate for tobacco cultivation — there’s a reason the Canadian Tobacco Belt is located right here. All these varieties grow exceptionally well in our climate, reaching up to 8 feet tall (except Aztec - 3 feet), developing thick stems, and producing large, lush leaves in abundance. It’s always fascinating to watch tiny, dust-like seeds transform into strong, tall plants in just one growing season.
Because of this rapid growth, tobacco plants need nutrient-rich, well-prepared soil to perform their best.
Choosing Your Variety
Each variety offers its own unique flavor profile and curing characteristics, so your choice depends on personal preference and intended use:
- Canadian Virginia – A stronger tobacco with a rich, full-bodied taste. Leaves cure to a warm brown and are almost ready to smoke after 10 months of barn curing.
- Virginia Gold – Milder and smoother, with leaves curing to a light golden-brown. It generally needs a longer curing period (at least a year) to develop its characteristic smooth flavor and lose the initial sharpness.
- Monte Calme Brun – A classic European cigar-type tobacco, known for its deep, complex aroma and dark brown cured leaves. Popular among home rollers and cigar enthusiasts.
- Burley – A traditional variety with mild, smooth smoke and low sugar content, making it ideal for blending or pipe tobacco. Burley cures to a light brown and is well-known for its easy drying process.
- Aztec – A hardy heirloom variety with aromatic, medium-strength flavor, historically used by Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Can be grown even in Northern Territories of Canada due to shorter vegetation period. Its broad leaves cure beautifully and can be used for both smoking and blending.
Whether you prefer a bold, full-bodied smoke or a mild, aromatic blend, these five varieties will all grow beautifully in Canadian soil and climate.
