How to Grow Squash (Pumpkin, Squash & Zucchini)
1. Planting Time
When: Sow seeds directly outdoors about 2 weeks before the last frost in your area.
Don’t worry if it’s still chilly — squash seeds will wait to sprout until the soil is warm enough.
2. Location
Choose a full sun spot in your garden.
Squash plants need lots of light and space to thrive.
3. Watering
Water seedlings periodically as needed.
As plants grow, give them a deep watering regularly — this encourages larger fruits.
⚠️ Avoid overwatering: soggy soil can cause fruits to rot.
4. Fertilizing
Feed plants with organic fertilizer about once a month.
Rich soil helps squash produce strong vines and plenty of fruits.
5. Harvesting
Zucchini: Pick when fruits are still green and tender — perfect for cooking.
Mature Squash & Pumpkins: Leave on the vine until the skin turns yellow, orange, or deep green (depending on the variety).
A hard skin means they’re ready for winter storage.
6. Storage
Store mature squash in a cool, dry, dark place (like a basement) at 15–18 °C.
They can last well into March or April the following year.
Check stored squash regularly — eat any that become soft or show signs of rot first.
7. Freezing Option
Cook and mash squash into portions.
Freeze in small bags or containers.
This way you can enjoy homegrown squash anytime, all year long.
