Beginning of March is best time to start tobacco from seeds in Ontario. Tobacco plants take 6-7 month to grow from seed to maturity and the first good Autumn frost will kill the whole plant if you do not harvest them right before that. So if summer in your area is short, then plan ahead and seed your tobacco indoors approximately 7 months before your usual first Fall frost.
We normally harvest tobacco plants at the end of September, so that beginning of March is the right time to seed tobacco.
Seed them first in small containers, spreading seeds on top of the soil and not covering them with soil. Spray seeds with water carefully to not wash them away. Then cover the container with clear cover - this will keep seeds warm and moist while having sunlight come thru - seeds need light to germinate !
We will keep posting updates on the seedling growing process..
